Yamaha SA2200BS Review

As a long-time admirer of Yamaha guitars, I was eager to explore the SA2200BS, particularly given its reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and sound quality. Upon unboxing, I was immediately struck by its stunning aesthetics; the flamed top and elegant gold hardware truly make it a work of art.

The fit and finish are nothing short of flawless, showcasing Yamaha’s commitment to quality. The polyurethane finish is beautifully applied, rivaling that of nitrocellulose finishes, and the overall craftsmanship feels boutique-level. The choice of woods, with a striking sycamore body and a mahogany neck, contributes to both its beauty and playability. The guitar arrived well set up, with excellent fretwork that felt perfect right out of the box.

In terms of playability, the neck is comfortable and well-crafted, allowing for smooth transitions across the fretboard. The nut and fret heights were slightly high, which may require adjustment, but it was a minor issue that I was able to resolve easily. The guitar plays like a dream, with no buzzing and a delightful response across all registers.

Sound-wise, the SA2200BS delivers a versatile tone that can easily transition from jazz to rock. The humbuckers provide a warm, full sound, while the coil-split function allows for single-coil tones that add to its versatility. While it may not replicate the exact characteristics of a classic Gibson 335, it certainly captures that essence while offering its own unique voice.

However, there were a couple of minor concerns. The pickup selector switch felt a bit flimsy and may require attention in the future. Additionally, while the hardware is generally excellent, some components could benefit from further refinement. The provided hard case, although sturdy, does not quite match the quality of the guitar itself.

In conclusion, the Yamaha SA2200BS is an outstanding instrument that offers incredible value for money. Its combination of beauty, flawless construction, and versatile sound makes it a worthy contender against higher-priced models. If you’re seeking a high-quality semi-hollow guitar that performs excellently across various genres, I wholeheartedly recommend the SA2200BS. It has undoubtedly become one of my favourite guitars, easily standing out in my collection.
