Harley Benton CST-24HB Tortoise Flame Review: Key features

Customer Review Summary

Harley Benton CST-24HB Tortoise Flame is an impressive guitar that offers remarkable value for its price. The overall aesthetic is striking, with a beautiful flame veneer that gives it a premium look, although some minor imperfections in the finish have been noted. The guitar feels solid and well-constructed, and it is surprisingly comfortable to play, making it suitable for various genres, from jazz to rock.

Upon unboxing, the guitar is almost in tune and requires minimal setup. The neck is generally straight, and the frets are well-finished, providing a smooth playing experience. Some players have reported needing to adjust the action slightly for optimal playability, but overall, it plays well right out of the box.

The sound produced by the Wilkinson pickups is warm and versatile, excelling in clean tones while still delivering satisfactory results with overdrive. However, some users have mentioned that the pickups can lack brightness and definition when distorted, particularly the neck pickup, which can sound overly warm. The coil-splitting feature is a nice addition, offering a range of tonal options that enhance its versatility.

While the hardware, such as the tuners and bridge, may not be top-of-the-line, they function adequately and do not detract significantly from the overall performance of the guitar. A few players have opted to upgrade these components for improved tuning stability and sound quality. It’s worth noting that the bridge is better suited for roundwound strings rather than flatwounds, which could limit some players.

In summary, the Harley Benton CST-24HB Tortoise Flame stands out as a well-rounded instrument, particularly for beginners and intermediate players. It combines good looks, playability, and a decent sound at an accessible price point. Although it may not compete with high-end models, it offers an excellent option for those looking for a quality guitar without breaking the bank. If you’re considering a semi-hollow body guitar, this model is certainly worth trying.

Harley Benton CST-24HB Tortoise Flame Review

The Harley Benton CST-24HB Tortoise Flame is a visually stunning guitar that offers impressive playability and comfort. The neck is particularly noteworthy, as it provides an excellent feel, making it easy for players of all hand sizes to navigate. Its lightweight design allows for extended playing sessions without discomfort, and the overall construction is solid, contributing to good tuning stability.

In terms of aesthetics, the colour and finish are generally well-received, though some users have noted minor imperfections. The flamed maple top adds a unique character, and many find it visually appealing from a distance. However, close inspection may reveal some cosmetic flaws, such as uneven binding or minor scratches.

Sound-wise, the guitar produces a pleasant tone, especially in the middle pickup position, which offers a rich and vibrant sound. While the clean tones are decent, the pickups may not satisfy those seeking a more aggressive sound, particularly in overdrive settings. Upgrading the pickups is often suggested for those looking to enhance the tonal quality significantly.

Setup upon arrival may require adjustment, especially regarding string action, which can be higher than preferred. Some users have encountered dead spots on certain frets, particularly affecting the B string, which can hinder playability. Despite this, the guitar’s versatility in different genres, from rock to blues, has been praised, with many enjoying its semi-hollow construction that allows for some acoustic playability.

Overall, the CST-24HB is an excellent choice for beginners and intermediate players seeking an affordable yet attractive instrument. Its combination of playability, design, and price point makes it a solid entry in the market, though potential buyers should be aware of the variability in quality and consider adjustments or upgrades to fully realise its capabilities.

Conclusion: If you’re a fan of hollowbody guitars and can overlook minor quirks, the Harley Benton CST-24HB Tortoise Flame is a fantastic option that offers great value for money.
